My Thoughts on Conducting Interviews

Just felt like writing a post on my views on interviews, these are purely my views out of my own experience. There is a possibility that you know this, but sharing this for folks who need some insight on interviews. (These ideas / thoughts are no way related to my current / previous employers)

Interviewing is a tricky exercise, especially when you do it over phone, be it in person / telephonic it is good to keep certain things in mind.

1. Once you look into a profile / resume, try to see if the candidate fits your needs. As time is precious for both the parties, try entering into a discussion if it will help you fill the position.

2. Interviewing is all about asking what the candidate knows and trying to evaluate with what he claims as known. It is not about asking what you know as an interviewer. Try to see if they really understood what they did.

3. If the profile doesn't match the current job, try to see if the candidate is suitable for any other position within the organization, now or in future, refer accordingly.

4. If you are unable to hire the candidate, it doesn't mean the profile is not good, it just means that the job requirements (level of knowledge, skills, etc.) don’t fit the profile. This is applicable even while attending interviews.

 5. Last but not the least, in the whole scheme of things, we are just instruments. It is not that we are doing something; it is just that it is happening through us :-)

These are just few basic tips, please feel free to comment / add more!
